Big Back – Meaning, Origin and Usage

What Does the Slang Term “Big Back” Mean?

The slang term “big back” has two different meanings, but both of them are related to body size. One meaning is a description of someone as having a large upper body, or in other words is another way of describing someone as overweight, fat, or obese.

The other meaning is similar but not exactly the same. This time, instead of referring to someone’s upper body, it refers to a woman with a big ass.

What Are the Origins of the Slang Term “Big Back”

The term “big back” was originally from early British slang, but the term later entered the African American vernacular following the release of a song in 1992 called “Baby Got Back” by the rapper Sir-Mix-A-Lot.

Much later, in early 2024, the term “big back” became popularised when people started posting videos of their meals, accompanied by the caption “big back activities”. The video footage would often be paired with YouTuber thecincomedy’s Big Back Parody song. This song is a parody of the Backpack song from the popular cartoon, Dora The Explorer, in which the word “backpack” is replaced with the term “big back”, and it talks about how the singer’s back is “loaded up with snacks and different foods.

TikTokers use the term big back when they’ve acted in a way they feel like was “fat.” This even occasionally featured users who put pillows under their shirts to make jokes about their weight and eating habits. Typical on trend videos may feature someone getting multiple servings of food at a family get together, or having lots of takeaway and fast food apps on your phone.

The term has also been used lovingly, for instance when TikTokers say things like “When we eat dinner and get to be big backs together.” However, many people see this slang term as being fatphobic, since it effectively reduces a person to their size and their weight.

Change In Usage of the Slang Term “Big Back”

Even though some people feel that the rapper Sir-Mix-A-Lot used the term “big back” as a compliment toward sexy women, in the context of women with a big ass, other people felt that this was sexualising young women, and feminists didn’t always like it.

These days however, since the days of the “big back” backpack parody, there can be no doubt that the term is used as an insult. And for this reason, you should be careful about using it. If you’re making your own “backpack” parody video, this will be seen as poking fun at yourself. However, describing someone else as having a big back would be seen as distasteful, because it can worsen someone’s self esteem issues if they see themselves as being overweight.

Final Word

The slang term “bog back” is usually seen as an insult, especially when being used to mean “fat” as opposed to “sexy”. Therefore you should be careful about using the phrase, and consider how it might be taken before using it. Or you can simply join in the trend and poke fun at yourself for eating junk food.
