What does the slang word “bussin” mean?

The slang word “bussin” is simply a word to express strong approval and satisfaction. It can be used to describe anything that is exceptionally good or great, or as impressive in some way.

Although the word can be used to describe anything that’s impressive or of high quality, such as music, fashion, banter, comedy, debate, experiences, places, or even people, the word is most often used to describe food as being delicious.

What’s the origin of the slang word “bussin”?

The precise origin of the term is not easily determined, however we do know that it originated from the African American Vernacular English (also known as AAVE). And despite its recent popularity with Gen Z, it may have been in use for decades prior to its rise among today’s youth.

It has been suggested that the term comes from its use in describing the tastiness of food. Or more specifically, from the slang word “bursting” which is a short form way of saying “bursting with flavour”.

That said however, an alternative origin story has also been put forward and is just as susceptible to critique. Some say the slang word “busting” which is another way of referring to dance moves, as in “busting some moves”. This origin story also arises from African American Vernacular English.

But that’s not the whole story either. There is also speculation that the word refers to “bussing”, or in other words, serving or clearing a table, thus framing the word metaphorically as something so good that you wipe the plate clean.

As the term gradually became more mainstream, people went from using the word “bussin” not only to describe food or dance moves as amazing but to describe anything that’s amazing or impressive.

As with so many other slang words that made it from AAVE into Gen Z slang, the word “bussin” was popularised through its use on social media platforms such as Tiktok in the 2010s. It officially reached mainstream when there were 2 songs with the title “Bussin” that were released in 2022 (more on this shortly).
