Ohio – Meaning, Origin & Usage

By Richard Barker · · 2 min read

Where does the slang term “Ohio” come from?

The slang word came to the fore in the year 2016, due to a funny misinterpretation of a sign in Chicago. Basically, the Chicago Transport Authority was making changes to their bus routes, and they displayed an announcement about the removal of a bus stop at the intersection of Ohio Street and Michigan Avenue.

However, the announcement read “Ohio will be eliminated”. This made it sound as though the US state of Ohio will be eliminated, which is of course absurd. Consequently, a photo of the announcement went viral on social media.

That said, it wasn’t until 2022 that the slang word “Ohio” and its meaning became popularised with the general public, and the trend has grown over the years.

This time, the phrase was typically used as a shortened form of “Only in Ohio”. The popularisation of the slang came about through several videos, across multiple different social media platforms, of bizarre and occasionally disturbing situations.

According to Sprout Social, there were over 10.2 million social engagements with the Ohio meme, including likes, comments and shares in one month alone in 2024, which is roughly double the levels of engagements from the year previous.

Common Ohio Slang Terms Decoded

More recently, you may see the slang word paired with other words from Gen Z or Gen alpha slang, but even Google gets confused by what these word pairings may mean. For example, “skibidi rizz” refers to someone who is good at flirting, while “skibidi Ohio” refers to something that is weird or eccentric. Or then there’s “skibidi Ohio rizz” which refers to someone who’s bad at flirting.

While the posting of strange or weird memes on social media is nothing new, the way this Ohio meme went so viral that it became part of the younger generations’ vernacular can be compared to the infamous “Florida man” news story trend, which revolves around a website where you put in the date of birth of you or your friends (or any date really) and discover what strange or weird things have been done by a Florida man on that date in previous years.

Meanwhile, sometime prior to this there has been a similar trend where the phrase “Only in Pakistan” where photos would be shared via email (because social media was really in its infancy at that point) showing imagery of absurd things that you simply wouldn’t see anywhere other than Pakistan.

Final Word

So, to sum up, the slang word “Ohio” can be used to refer to anything that is absurd, weird, dumb, or cringeworthy. The slang is most often used by generations Z and alpha, and is often combined with other such slang, to highlight the bizarreness of whatever is being described. The word can be used to refer to someone’s embarrassment or simply to point out something humorous.
