What is the origin of the slang word “shiesty”?

While the slang word “shiesty” has only come to the fore in recent decades, the word it is derived from has been around a lot longer. More specifically, it dates back as far as the 1800s…

The word “shiesty” is believed by many to be derived from the older slang word “shyster”, which was first seen in print in the year 1846. In terms of the precise etymology, there is still some speculation as to where the word “shyster” came from. That said, however, the most widely accepted theory is that it is derived from the German word Scheißer, which means “defecator” or “worthless person”.

Another theory is that the word “shyster” is simply a combination of the word “shy”, and the suffix “-ster”. And some have said that the word may link back to a character called Shylock from Shakespeare’s Merchant of Venice, or to a specific lawyer named Scheuster. Others have argued that the word is a blend of the words “shit” and “fiesty”. However, there’s very little concrete support for any of these theories.

Anyway, people started using the slang “shyster” more frequently in the 1840s in the United States to describe unscrupulous lawyers and politicians, and people who are unethical, and willing to use deceptive or fraudulent methods to achieve their ends.

But, it was much later when the slang word “shiesty” came into prominence. Specifically in African American slang in the lyrics of rap and hip-hop, dating back to around 1998, which is much more recent.

Since then, the online Urban Dictionary has seen around 30 different definitions that feature the slang word.

Final word

So, to summarise, the word “shiesty” is derived form the slang word “shyster”, which dates back to the 1800s, and is likely derived from the German word Scheißer, which means “defecator” or “worthless person”.

However, it wasn’t until the 1990s that word “shiesty” came into common use, thanks to lyrics in the rap and hip-hop scenes in the United States. The slang “shiesty” is still used today to refer to someone who is untrustworthy and unscrupulous, and the word has particular association with descriptions of unethical lawyers.
